Building Character is Paramount

The need for building character cannot be understated. Most young Americans, at present, face a crisis of character. The so-called traditional role models continue to disappoint, falling short of expectations, and generating cynicism rather than idealism.

Consequently, many young people today are confused, unable to distinguish between right and wrong. It is, therefore, up to parents and schools to take up the paramount duty of building character, right from early childhood. Do not forget that "a child is father to the man".

A person's character is defined by what he does, not what he says or believes. Building character requires learning to do the right thing, even when it is costly or risky. The payoff for having good character is that it makes you a better person, which makes the world a better place to live in.

The Role of Educators

Most educators agree that assisting students in building moral character is a worthwhile goal. Some of the virtues stressed in schools today include: compassion, courtesy, co-operation, responsibility, fairness, tolerance, self-control, courage, knowledge, citizenship, perseverance, helpfulness, honesty, and respectfulness (toward self, others, authority, property and the environment).

Possession of even a few of these virtues signifies a person of outstanding good character.

Educators can inculcate ethical beliefs by acting as a model for their students. They can introduce various activities such as reading good books on building character, discussing autobiographies of outstanding persons, designing skits, playing games and composing songs.

Educators should involve children in making classroom rules. Educators can demonstrate communicational skills so that the students learn how to communicate with clarity.

Educators should be humble enough to admit their mistakes. They should set reasonable academic standards, keeping in mind the child's age and ability. Stress should be laid on honesty in the completion of assignments. Students can be involved in voluntary work such as-clothing collection, food donation etc.

Educators can collaborate with parents in the process of building character, monitoring the child's experiences with the outside world and in controlling events that undermine virtuous behavior.

But the parents are the child's initial role models. They themselves must display positive character traits if their children are to develop the values they hold dear. This lays a solid foundation for the child of today and the nation of tomorrow.
