Building Character Lesson Plans
to Enhance
Early Childhood Education

Building Character Lesson Plans: Obedience Vs Independence

This is a very controversial subject, one that depends entirely on one's objective. To many people, "lesson plans for building character" merely means getting kids to do what they say. They may impose a set of rules, rewards and punishments that produce a limited and temporary change in the behavior of the kids. But this may have no effect on the basic character of the kids.

A different and better approach for building character lesson plans is to develop independent thinkers who are committed to moral principles and are likely to do the right thing, even under difficult circumstances.

A great way to illustrate to the kids what the lesson is all about is to use books that have a story about one of their peers being in a situation to choose the right.

Lisa Peck, noted authur, has written a series of books that provide the correct lessons to teach the kids.

The CTR Club offers this series of four books that make it easy for children to understand why character building is so important.

Building Character Lesson Plans: A Holistic Approach

A holistic approach, which integrates character development into every aspect of school life, is also known as 'whole school reform'. Lesson plans for building character are a big part of this. Some of the distinguishing features of these plans are:

  • Values like honesty, respect and fairness are a part of everyday lessons.
  • Co-operation and collaboration among students, rather than competition, are emphasized.
  • Everything in the school is focused on the development of relationships between students, the faculty and the community.
  • Social and emotional learning is given as much importance as academic learning.
  • Ample opportunities are given to the students to practice moral behavior.
  • Classroom management and discipline focus on problem solving rather than on reward and punishment.
  • Teachers and students hold democratic class meetings to solve problems establish rules and build unity, instead of the old model of the teacher- centered classroom.

This ideal approach requires sufficient time, a substantial budget, and a commitment from management and teachers.

Stage Two: Lesson Planning and Implementation

  • Objectives
  • Instructional goals
  • Rationale
  • Unit title
  • Content
  • Instructional procedures
  • Evaluation procedures
  • Materials

Stage Three: Post–lesson Procedures

  • Lesson revision and evaluation
